Three die as bus crashes into two lorries in Mbeya Region
At least three people died and 16 others were injured on Wednesday night when a bus plying between Tanzania and DR Congo was involved in a head-on collision in Mbeya Region.
Acting Mbeya regional police commander Emmanuel Lukula said the tragic accident occurred at around 8.30 pm, in Kongolo-Mswiswi village, Mbarali District along the Tanzania-Zambia road.
It involved the passenger bus christened Taqwa, registration number T.321 DAK, which was heading to Lubumbashi from Dar es Salaam and collided with a truck with registration number T.348 DEK, travelling to Dar es Salaam.
According to the acting RPC, after the initial impact with the lorry, the bus driver lost control and ran into another truck, killing three people on the spot.
He cited reckless driving as the main cause of the accident as the driver of the first truck was trying to overtake another vehicle.
Lukula named those who died as assistant bus driver Hamza Ibrahim, Shizya Honjas (24) who was an assistant driver in the first truck, and a woman who was yet to be identified.
The 16 injured victims were rushed to Chimara Hospital where four of them were discharged and continued with their journey.
Those who were injured have been identified as Dar es Salaam resident Hussein Mwanjali, Den Jason Mwambande (32) of Kyela District, Shabani Ally (30) of Dar es Salaam, and Kapinga Dominick (32), a resident of South Africa.
Others are Shabani Mohamed (36) of Dar es Salaam, Lugano Hakson (27) of Mbalizi area in Mbeya city, Luyamba Mhumbi Malyeti (45) of Lubumbashi (DR Congo), and Kalenga Kabange (39) from DR Congo.
